May spend & goals check in

In May I did better in terms of spending than in April, but I’m still not working within my budget. I think this is because I need to revisit parts of my budget and update them, and I also need to further reduce some areas of spending.

Spend report

My spend report showing an over-spend of about $760. This month I bought running shoes for almost $200, donated more than I planned to, and spent over $500 in groceries.

I want to revisit my grocery budget since I think $250 isn’t realistic. Also, I love trying new recipes, and I’m okay to spend a little more on ingredients for cooking and baking since I get a lot of entertainment and joy from it. Still, I want to find ways to save money and meal plan wisely where I can.

Investment report

Nothing much to say here. My contributions are on track!

Goals check in

Personal goals

  • Sort out my personal file folders PASS (This is still unfinished, but in drastically better shape)
  • Donate 20 books NOPE (No excuse for this one! I just didn’t make it a priority)
  • Spend time each week learning sign language PASS (I’ve been enjoying this!)
  • Jog at least 1x per week NOPE (Chocking this one up to getting COVID at the beginning of the month. But I did buy running shoes and jogged once!)

Writing goals

  • Blog at least once per week PASS
  • Write at least 1000 words in my novel PASS (I wrote 1,701 words this month)
  • Join at least 1 live writing sprint online NOPE (Eep! Not yet)
  • Research writer’s groups and courses to join NOPE

Finance goals

  • Track my expenses PASS
  • Meet my budget targets NOPE (and will revise targets for next month)
  • Save/invest at least $2200 this month PASS
  • Make at least 3 freezer meals PASS (I’m going to give myself a pass on this one, even though some of these meals were technically fridge meals. Some of my make ahead/make extra fridge meals were enchiladas, pizza, curry, tofu scramble, oatmeal bars, veggie pot pie, and pasta with sauce)

I met just over 50% of the goals I set. June is a new month where I can continue a lot of these and set new goals.

Happy saving,

Sovereign Squirrel
